Organic cotton vs. conventional cotton
Organic cotton is considered better than conventionally grown cotton mainly because it is grown without the use of synthetic pesticides, fertilisers, or genetically modified organisms (“GMOs”). It promotes sustainable farming practices and reduces the environmental impact of conventional cotton farming. Additionally, organic cotton is hypoallergenic, breathable and known for its moisture-wicking properties making it a great choice for comfortable and luxurious bedding and towels.
On the other hand, conventional cotton uses more water, harmful chemicals and pesticides than any other crop in the world.
Why do we choose organic cotton
We choose to make all of our products with organic cotton for the following reasons:
- Better product for you: Organic cotton fibers are known for their softness, breathability, and hypoallergenic properties, making them a healthier and more comfortable choice for luxury bedding and bath towels
- Better for the planet: Organic cotton farming uses 91% less water and 62% less energy than conventional cotton. It results in 46% less CO2 emissions and contributes to water conservation and lesser soil erosion. Since it is grown without the use of harmful fertilisers and pesticides, it also results in a safer food chain.
- Better for our farmers: Organic cotton eliminated the use of toxic chemicals and pesticides which are a mainstay in conventional farming practices and extremely harmful for the health of farmers around the world.
The highest organic standard
All Homebird products are made with 100% organic cotton certified by the Global Organic Textile Standard (“GOTS”) – the highest standard for organic certification. GOTS is a globally recognised certification for organic fibers like cotton and it ensures that the entire production process, from harvesting the raw materials to the final product, meets strict environmental and social criteria. It is a mark of authenticity and sustainability in the textile industry.
Why choose Fairtrade
Fairtrade is a global movement that aims to ensure fair prices and better working conditions for farmers and workers along the entire supply chain. It promotes sustainable farming practices and empowers producers to improve their livelihood.
When you see the Fairtrade label on a product, it means that it has been certified to meet the ethical and economic standards through mandated minimum wages and a Fairtrade “premium” – an additional sum that workers can invest as they choose. It is a great way to support farmers and workers around the world.
Why it matters to us
Our founder, Saloni, has a background in textile manufacturing and her prior roles in the industry have given her a first-hand glimpse into the harsh realities of the textile industry we all hear about.
This is why choosing organic and Fairtrade cotton as the main ingredient for all of our products was a non-negotiable pillar as we founded Homebird back in 2020. While we a proudly Canadian brand based in Vancouver, British Columbia, our founders, Saloni and Gaurav, are originally from India, so having the ability to make an impact back in the country where we grew up was truly personal.
We work with small cotton farming cooperatives to source our cotton, and with manufacturing partners who are not only the best in the business in producing high-quality bedding and towels, but also prioritize ethical and sustainable manufacturing practices.
